Worries over the cost of renting and the difficulty of saving a deposit to buy a property are among some of the concerns of young people, according to youth charity, the YMCA.

More than 2,000 respondents to YMCA’s What Matters Most survey were questioned about housing, and 42% highlighted the cost of rent as their biggest worry.

A further 39% highlighted the cost of household bills and 34% the cost of a mortgage deposit as major concerns.

Denise Hatton, Chief Executive of YMCA England, the National Council of YMCAs, said: “We know at YMCA how important it is for young people to access safe housing, and it is clear from this research that this generation has very real fears about being cut adrift from society as political and economic realities continue bite.

“This is why YMCA has been calling on the Government to introduce a Help to Rent scheme as well as to support the building of affordable accommodation, such as YMCA’s Y:Cube. We believe it is measures such as these that will give young people the help they need to succeed in modern Britain.”
