Parents are willing to spend as much as £19,000 more on a property that is located within the catchment area for a good school.

Research by price comparison website Confused found that nearly one-in-five parents started thinking about potential schools before their child was born.

More than two-thirds of parents said they were willing to consider moving home in order to be close to a better school.

When moving home, parents said they were happy to spend an average of £19,000 more on houses that are near good schools.

Almost a tenth of respondents (9%) said they had given a false address to a potential school to make sure it was in the catchment area.

Some 12% of people surveyed said they had listed their child on a school waiting list before they were born. Because of such fraught competition, almost a quarter (24%) believed school admissions need to be changed so that the best schools aren’t just for those who live nearby.

Gareth Lane, head of home insurance at Confused, said many parents would now be finding out which school their children would be attending next in September.

“April 16th is a huge day for parents and children across England,” he said.

“For many, it’s the culmination of years of planning and thought over the best school to choose. Some might be disappointed but, hopefully, the majority will be happy when they tear open their envelope.”
