Two-in-three Brits say they plan to undertake a DIY improvement project on their home in the next year, according to a study.

People in the UK have collectively spent more than £22 billion on household DIY projects in the last 12 months, said Sainsbury’s Bank.

This represents a £1,085 spend for each property owner undertaking household upgrade work.

Some 79% of people said they had carried out at least one DIY project in the last year, covering everything from putting up shelves to bigger projects like attic conversion.

The back garden is the area people most often look to improve, with 26% looking to redevelop their outdoor space themselves. A quarter of people said their bedrooms needed some improvement while 22% said their kitchen was in need of renovation.

Bathrooms, living rooms and drives were also popular areas for homeowners to spend their cash, the report added.
