Homeowners splash out on DIY

More than a third of homeowners spend in excess of £2,000 on home improvements every year, according to Saga Home Insurance.

The North West is home to the biggest spenders, where 37% of homeowners admit to spending more than £2,000 a year, compared to one-in-four of those in the South West and London, who spend £50 a year.

The research also found 43% of households have unfinished DIY jobs, with half of all outstanding jobs having been left unfinished for more than three months. Compared to the 52% of Londoners and 54% of teachers who have unfinished DIY projects, Saga found homeowners over the age of 50 are the UK’s most diligent category of home improvers, with 36% admitting to leaving projects unfinished.

Reasons for unfinished home improvements differed according to gender – 48% of men admitted to just ‘not getting round to it’, while 49% of women said they simply didn’t have enough time to complete the work.
