Bank of Scotland has topped the Financial Ombudsman’s complaints list for mortgages and home finance, the latest data has shown.

From 1 July to 31 December, 1126 complaints were received for mortgage and home finance related transactions taken out with Bank of Scotland.

Santander received 969 complaints and Northern Rock Asset Management received 493 complaints despite being established in 2010 with no active lending book to absorb Northern Rock’s high risk mortgages.

Barclays received 83 complaints while Nationwide had 324 complaints lodged against it.

Lloyds fell outside the top five most complained about lenders for mortgages and home finance with 132 but came top of the FOS table for complaints across all areas of financial services with 40,500 in total.

The five most-complained about adviser firms for mortgage and home finance were Legal and General Partnership Services, which contains the L&G network and club distribution channels, with 44 complaints, followed by Connells with 41, Countrywide with 37 and Sesame with 31 and Person Touch with 20.

Complaints for Payment Protection Insurance continued to dominate the FOS’s workload with Lloyds Banking Group receiving the most at 36,954.

The Ombudsman took on a record 575,836 new cases in total in 2013 – an increase of more than a third (38%) on the previous year.
