Some 54% of the nation’s first-time buyers said they prefered to rent before they bought their first home while 6% rented but then moved back to the family home to save for a deposit.

Almost two-fifths (39%) of those at home claimed to live rent free. Some 61% paid rent every month and a further 21% made a contribution through helping at home, paying bills or buying food for the household.

Four fifths of Scots living at home paid rent to their parents compared to just 46% of those in London.
