The folk of Eastenders and Coronation Street would never be able to own their own homes

The entire village of Emmerdale, the whole of Coronation Street and most of the residents of Albert Square would be priced out of the housing market, unable to afford their on-screen homes.

New data from website urban.co.uk showed that the only soap character able to afford his flat would be Hollyoaks schoolteacher Louis Loveday.

He could borrow £193,200 based on his salary as a school teacher to purchase his flat, currently estimated at £195,850.

But the vast majority of our favourite soap characters would only be able to rent their homes, as they wouldn’t be able to secure a mortgage, based on their current estimated salaries and property values.

Removed from reality

Urban.co.uk assessed the current job salaries and estimated property values for 24 soap characters.

The entire village of Emmerdale earns far less than needed to buy a property in Esholt; the village where the fictional village of Emmerdale is set. And only one of the eight Corrie characters assessed, Leanne Tilsley, restaurant manager, was anywhere near being able to purchase her property, but even she still had a deficit of £6,874.75 (28% of her current yearly salary).

Denise Fox from EastEnders would have a deficit of over £1m if she were to attempt to purchase her four bedroom semi-detached house with a 5% deposit.

Adam Male, co-founder of Urban.co.uk, said: “Our research shows just how far from reality the lives of these characters actually are, with hardly anyone able to afford their homes in real life.”
