Mortgage lenders are increasingly charging non-refundable fees which may apply even if the mortgage application is not approved, an online mortgage comparison site has warned.

Research by mform.co.uk has found that customers could lose as much as £750 on a £150,000 mortgage application.

Mform.co.uk‘s Chief Executive Eamonn Rice said: “Lenders will argue that the non-refundable fee is justified and that it only applies in very limited circumstances.

“All of this is true but none of it will be relevant or of any comfort to a borrower who has to pay a fee for a mortgage they do not get. Losing £750 is a very serious blow to most people’s finances.”
