Women prioritise the proximity to good schools above all else when deciding where to move, research has suggested.

A survey of 2,000 people by estate agency Strutt & Parker showed the differences between men and women’s housing desires.

Women ranked good schools as the most important consideration when choosing a new home. Access to public transport, shops and local amenities were also sought after.

For men, tax charges and mobile phone coverage were rated highly.

Inside the property, 14% of men said they wanted a cinema or screening room and 12% a wine cellar. By contrast 24% of women wanted a top of the range over and 18% looked for a kitchen island.

Both men and women surveyed said ‘traditional British’ was their ideal property style. Women were more open to different designs including ‘warehouse loft’ and ‘classical French’.

Stephanie McMahon, head of research at Strutt & Parker, said: “Our overall analysis points towards elements such as broadband connectivity and access to amenities being very important for buyers.

“However, men and women appear to have a slightly different interpretation on what these might mean.”

“When referring to private rental, for example, for men amenities and services might mean concierge services and grocery drop off, for women it might mean ability to bring pets and disabled accessibility. Both genders place personal finances as important which reflects both the capital growth of the last 30 years from residential property, as well as the ability to either use equity for lifestyle reasons or as deposits on a future property purchase.”
