With an average £1,400 of unused tech equipment in our homes, it’s important to reassess your contents cover

Brits are harbouring unused gadgets and electrical devices in their homes worth a total £37bn, according to research by Aviva insurance.

It said we are a nation of hoarders, with the typical home host to redundant tech items worth around £1,414 on average.

These include kitchen gadgets, old mobile phones, personal grooming kits and garden tools.

Stephen Pond of Aviva said: “Digital innovations mean we’re changing the way we do certain things, such as listening to music or watching TV. This often means we don’t use particular devices any more, so we put them to one side and replace them with different models.”

However, it’s important that when we increase the number of expensive items in our home we reassess our insurance policy to ensure we are adequately covered.

Pond added: “Each time we get a new piece of ‘tech’, the value of our possessions increases, so it’s important we have adequate home contents insurance in place, both in and away from the home.”
