M&S Bank has urged holidaymakers to prepare their home against opportunistic thieves and other criminals before they head away this summer.

Some 82% of people plan to take a holiday in the next 12 months, with over a quarter (27%) expecting to leave the property unattended for two weeks or more.

Home insurance data showed that more thefts take place in July than any other month, suggesting burglars target homes vacated by holidaymakers.

Almost three-quarters of people surveyed (70%) said they would ask a neighbour, friend or family member to keep an eye on the property.

Over half of people (57%) said they would move expensive items away from windows and visible areas.

However, 12% of people said they would not take any precautions at all.

Paul Stokes, head of products at M&S Bank, said: “The summer period is an incredibly popular time for the family to get away and so we’re urging homeowners to take a little extra time to ensure their home is secure. By taking a few simple security measures before they jet off, homeowners will have added peace of mind, helping them to relax and enjoy their break.

“In addition, holidaymakers should also check their home insurance policy and ensure they’re familiar with any exclusions or conditions, such as limits on value and how long the property can be left unoccupied, particularly if heading away for extended periods. This will help ensure the policy provides adequate cover, should the worst happen.”
