Consumer body panel, Which?, has been given approval by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to launch a mortgage advice service for its members and their family and friends.

The free service will launch later this month and follows feedback from members who said they were unsure of where to find a trustful and impartial source for mortgage advice.

Chris Gardiner, commercial director at Which?, said: “Buying a house is the largest financial commitment that most people will make and choosing the right mortgage is an important and complicated decision.

“Our members tell us that they find it difficult to know where they can turn to get trustworthy advice from someone who will give them the full picture. We believe that this service will give our members access to the advice they want.”

The service will look at every mortgage by every lender, including direct-only mortgages.

The advice will be completely free for Which? members and advisers will not be getting any personal commission for completed transactions.

The consumer body has revealed that it will be funding the service and paying advisers on a salary basis.

It has employed a small number of mortgage brokers ready for the launch later this month and the service will be advertised in its monthly magazine.
