Home-owners travel an average of 125 miles as a result of moving house and expect to live in and own five properties in their lifetime.

Nearly half the home-owners who moved did so in order to buy a larger house, while a quarter chose to move because they found another area more desirable.

Steve Gilbert, home underwriting manager at Zurich Insurance, said: “The British obsession with finding the perfect property is still going strong, with home-owners prepared to move hundreds of miles to find the perfect home in the perfect location.”

A fifth of home-owners want to move to a property in the country and, when asked about their dream living location, British home-owners put the South West top of the list, with 25 per cent of respondents voting it the region they’re most like to live in.

Londoners are the least likely to roam to find the perfect house, moving an of average of just 77 miles, while Scots are the most likely to go the distance, clocking up an average of 234 miles to find the right spot.
