The price comparison website found 27% of people have aspirations of building their own property.

The majority of people (79%) said they wanted the freedom to design a home exactly how they wanted.

Many would choose to include modern technologies in the home, with 34% wanting the ability to control appliances using a smartphone.

Self-flushing toilets (21%) and voice activated lighting (20%) were also on the wish list of would-be property designers.

Those surveyed said in the next ten years they would expect facial recognition security systems (43%), ‘smart’ fridges (36%) and voice activated cookers (19%) to be a common feature of new homes.

However, despite the success of programmes like Channel 4’s Grand Designs, just one in every 15 people currently builds their own home.

A third of people who would consider building their own home said they wanted to live in a unique property.

Gareth Lane, head of home insurance at Confused, said technology was playing a crucial role in property design.

“We’re all individuals and it’s understandable that we’d want to reflect this within our homes,” he said.

“Building your own home is the ultimate step towards that goal – whether you prefer a more traditional home or one with every gadget on the market.

“Brits are more technology savvy than ever but this does come at a price. When buying fancy gadgets, it’s vital to check these features are covered on your home insurance policy, especially the more futuristic ‘wacky’ technology that is often very expensive. This includes adjusting your policy when you renovate or purchase new items.”
